Moss as Substrate or Decoration?
Both options.
- moss as substrate (one layer): Place a sheet of moss at the bottom of the terrarium to create a natural tropical substrate. Ideal for turtles, some lizards, and hedgehogs.
- moss as substrate (multiple layers): Tear the moss into small pieces and lay a thick layer at the bottom. A high moss substrate will be suitable for large frogs and other amphibians and reptiles that like to burrow.
- moss as decoration: Create a cave from the moss, lay the moss on bark or roots to create a tropical environment full of plants.
- moss as background: Use glue to attach the moss to the background in the terrarium.

Shadow Forest Moss:
Currently available live terrarium substrates on the market are artificially treated mosses. They are sold by weight. Almost always, they are artificially dyed in various shades of green. Alternatively, you can buy pressed moss, which has a completely different characteristic.
